Comms Declare has welcomed the Australian government joining the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change.
Announced during a Talanoa dialogue with Pacific climate ministers in Sydney, the commitment aligns Australia with a coalition of 15 other nations, including the United Kingdom and Canada, dedicated to ensuring that climate action is guided by trusted, science-based information.
The initiative is a collaborative effort led by the United Nations, UNESCO, and the Government of Brazil and aims to counter the “defining challenges” of the modern era: disinformation, misinformation, and climate denialism, which threaten to delay urgent global responses and undermine public trust.
As Australia prepares to co-host COP31 alongside Pacific nations, its participation is a vital step in supporting a robust information ecosystem in a region disproportionately affected by climate change.
Australia has several clear pathways for action under the framework of the Declaration;
- Policy and Legal Frameworks: The government is encouraged to develop and enforce legal frameworks that promote information integrity while strictly adhering to international human rights and freedom of expression standard
- Protection of Information Providers: A core component involves ensuring the safety and protection of environmental journalists, researchers, and scientists, allowing their findings to be heard without fear of harassment
- Promoting Media Pluralism: Australia should support a diverse and resilient media ecosystem through policies that encourage accurate coverage of environmental issues and increase transparency in advertising practices
- Public Literacy and Awareness: Implementation includes launching literacy campaigns to empower people to identify reliable information and understand climate risks
- Enhanced Data Transparency: The agreement calls for ensuring easy public access to reliable climate data and clean energy information, facilitating informed decision-making for businesses and communities.
