Victoria’s Bass Strait Council has unanimously supported excluding fossil fuel organisations from a new partnership.
The amendment was moved on 15 July 2026 by Councillor Mat Morgan during consideration of an Environmental Partnership Agreement between Council and Western Port Down Under to fund a feature documentary and educational campaign highlighting the local marine ecosystem.
Now the one-year, $55,000 partnership cannot include any funding or sponsorships from “companies involved in fossil fuel extraction”.
As more councils align their public funding with their climate commitments, Bass Strait Council’s decision demonstrates that local governments can take meaningful action to reduce fossil fuel industry influence in their communities.
