Children in the Australian Capital Territory are getting the best start to 2026 with a new policy that prohibits fossil fuel companies from marketing in schools.

The Australian-first policy comes after a Greens motion was supported in the Territory’s Legislative Assembly in March 2025.

A survey commissioned by Comms Declare found that 56% of parents were against coal, oil and gas companies sponsoring school programs and 87% of parents said they would prefer government funding over fossil fuel companies in schools.

The state of Victoria has also formally recognised that climate change should be considered by schools when choosing commercial partners.
