Adelaide Metro to remove bus signs after greenwashing finding

The advertising regulator Ad Standards has found that Adelaide Metro has been misleading the public about gas.

It comes after a complaint lodged by climate communications charity Comms Declare about Adelaide Metro buses advertising the message; ‘Natural Gas – Clean and Green’.

The ad appears on roofs of Adelaide Metro Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and alleges that their gas fuel has no adverse environmental or health impacts.

Belinda Noble, founder of Comms Declare said, “This is another warning to any advertisers that want to make claims about gas products being good for the environment. Methane gas creates toxic pollution at all stages of its production and use and is a major cause of global heating.”

Ad Standards found that the ads’ environmental claim was too vague as well as being misleading and untruthful.

In response, the South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport said, “The Department has reviewed the decision and will take the appropriate action to remedy the issue in the near future.”

Similar rulings have been made this year against Hancock Prospecting, and two Australian Gas Networks (AGN) ads.
