New Zealand’s historic first clean communications policy

In a landmark move, New Zealand’s Greater Wellington Regional Council has voted to ban fossil fuel advertising across the Metlink public transport network, which spans buses, trains, and ferries across the region.

This is New Zealand’s first fossil fuel advertising ban, and it sets a powerful precedent for other councils to follow. Just as tobacco ads were removed to protect public health, fossil fuel ads must go to protect our climate and communities.

The city’s Metlink Advertising Policy makes it clear: “Products and/or their packaging that are considered by Greater Wellington to significantly harm the environment and conservation efforts” are not permitted. Importantly, this includes advertising for combustion engine vehicles powered by fossil fuels, aligning with international standards for fossil ad bans.

Comms Declare is working with allies in Aotearoa to ensure this win is just the beginning. We’re encouraging more local governments, starting with Auckland and Dunedin, to join Greater Wellington in drawing a line against polluting industries.
