Coal-backed think tanks spent up big to help the Liberal National Party (LNP) win the 2024 Queensland election.

In October, the anti-renewable Australian Institute for Progress spent $155,346 on Meta ads (pictured). That’s more than the Labor Party’s $123,888 and nearly triple the amount of the Greens ($62,085).

The Institute’s Chairman and Executive Director are the former President and Vice President of the Queensland Liberal Party. Half of their ad spend ($613,500) was donated by Coal Australia.

Also partly-funded by Coal Australia is the Liberal-linked Australians for Prosperity, whose Google ad was shown more than a million times in and around Brisbane.

The Australian newspaper reports coal companies gave $1.5m to third party groups  to support the LNP, following Labor’s plan to increase coal royalties.

Labor and the LNP both spent $1.1m across Meta and Google in October.
