Background:
Comms Declare is a movement of communications professionals committed to changing the narrative about climate change. The organisation campaigns for an end to the promotion of high-emissions products, such as coal, oil and gas.
Fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship bans are in place in more than 40 jurisdictions around the world, including in Australia.
This research will look into the best avenues for such bans in New Zealand and the Pacific, which could help fulfil the vision of a fossil-free Pacific, especially in the lead up to a potential Pacific COP31 in 2026.
The successful applicant will work directly with the organisation’s campaigner, who has achieved bans on fossil fuel ads and sponsorships in Australia via the Fossil Ad Ban campaign.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Research
- Conduct research into national, state and local government/city legislation and policies across Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific Islands to identify which could most easily be amended to restrict fossil fuel advertising and/or sponsorships.
- Outline the current landscape and identify the best potential avenues for future restrictions including priority countries/geographies and laws/policies.
- Identify the level of impact of various proposals
- Identify budgets and resources required to execute the proposed actions and scenarios that fit within the budget/resource frame.
- Identify climate-aligned politicians and potential partners.
- Make recommendations for actionable next steps to drive effective policy change.
- Consider the potential role of a successful Australian/Pacific bid for COP31, what impact that would have on the recommendations and possible opportunities for action around COP31.
Other Duties
- Ensure compliance with all safety and OH&S requirements
- Manage workloads and escalate when required
Skills and Capabilities:
- Experience in delivering actionable research into laws and policies and/or political campaigning
- Strong local knowledge and contacts in the Pacific in particular as well as New Zealand
- Strong writing skills
- Strong knowledge and interest in climate change, media and government policy
- Ability to conduct research diplomatically and confidentially
